How to make riches in Onion Processing
The Agribusiness magazine is pleased to bring this virgin opportunity about processing onions. It`s the first one of its kind and we are looking forward to have many of the onions that have been rotting in markets due to market challenges processed. I also know of many onion farmers who have been skeptical scaling up their production claiming that the market cannot uptake extra onions. I am also aware that there are periods when there is scarcity of onions on the markets to the extent that we import them from neighboring countries. This is therefore an opportunity to process the onions in order to extend their life shelf and they can be consumed when in scarcity. In addition to the extended shelf life, the processed onions attract more prices and can be exported to regional and international markets. Before unleashing the processing technologies available for onions, allow me first present the basic production agronomy for my readers who are new into onion production;
Preparation and Fertilizing
Onions require full sun, good soil drainage and soil rich in nitrogen. Choose a location that gets plenty of direct sun and where your onion plants will not be shaded by other crops. Onions grow best on raised beds or raised rows at least 4″ high and 20″ wide. Pull and remove all visible weeds. The soil should be loose and crumbly. If it’s compacted, work in compost to improve aeration and drainage. Onions are heavy feeders and require consistent feeding to produce big solid bulbs. At planting time, prepare the soil first with compost and also work in a good source of granular, high nitrogen fertilizer.
